Business as Usual or Building Wealth?

If you’re like most business owners, you have a busy routine.

In fact, it’s a routine that you and everything (dare I say, everyone) in your life must adhere to.

For you, business as usual typically means “Serve client. Next!. Serve Client. Next!”

Basically, it’s a frenzy of activity and keeping busy.

You’ve got no time to think, no time to come up for air and contemplate what to do to work “on” your business rather than “in” your business.

And based on results, this kind of busywork really means business mediocrity.

Don’t believe me?

Consider this…

Like most people, most businesses are mediocre.

It may sound harsh but think about it… That’s why we call the exceptional person “exceptional” – because they’re different than most everyone else.

And that’s what I want for you.

I want to inspire you to operate on a higher level.

Now I realise that nobody ever wakes up and says “I want to run my business inefficiently and be mediocre and have nothing to show for it”.

Yet, most businesses are grossly under-performing.

And what’s worse, most will continue to under-perform forever.

Let me give you an example.

I was looking at buying a business a couple of weeks ago.

The owners had been in the business for 17 years and now they’re too old to run it.

The asking price for the business was $245k but the profit was only around $20K per year.

They desperately want to sell the business because they want to go on holidays, enjoy their retirement and just get out of the day to day routine.

However, as I was investigating the opportunity, I noticed that some things didn’t quite add up…

The owners said they want want to sell – but really, they just want to get out of paying for the lease every month.

The way things are right now, they’ll have to either shut the business down or give it away.

“Give it away? What…? Why?”

It’s simple, really.

I’m saying “give it away” because the business isn’t worth anything.

I know it sounds harsh but this is the truth.

There are practically no assets to speak of – and certainly no growth potential within the current setup.

This is definitely NOT the outcome you want after a lifetime of hard work.

And yet… their case is not unique.

There are so many business owners I see day after day who are working long hours and weekends.

They are missing out on time with their family and they really don’t get to watch their kids grow up.

They’re not able to go on extended holidays and they’re not able to enjoy even the simplest little things in life.

They’re constantly stressed.

And for what?

Only to end up with nothing.

As common as these stories are, each time I meet a business owner with this type of “profile”, my heart goes out to them.

It’s a tragedy to be working so hard, putting your business in front of everything else and at the end, have nothing to show for it.

My hope is that this article serves as as serious wake-up call for you.

I urge you to take a good look at what you’re doing and evaluate whether it’s helping you build an asset or it’s just keeping you busy in a job that you created for yourself.

Be very careful what you devote your life and your efforts to.
